The Local Area

Tiddlers Well and Paddock are superbly located in quiet woodland adjacent to thousands of acres of open pebble bed heathland famed for its birdlife and fantastic views. Yet despite its rural location it is just half a mile from the nearest pub and 1.5 miles from the town of Budleigh Salterton with its pebble beach and just 4 miles from the larger towns of Exmouth and Sidmouth with further sandy and shingle beaches and extensive shopping facilities.

The historic cathedral City of Exeter is just 11 miles and the famous wildernesses of Dartmoor and Exmoor are within an hours drive.

Beaches

Budleigh Salterton – 1.5 miles
A quiet, beautiful pebble beach on the edge of a town which (has frozen in time) with River Otter estuary, wildlife area leading to and away from it. The coastal path that runs all along the South West is just 1 mile away from Tiddlers Cottages and both the beach and coast path are spectacular and peaceful places to walk and watch the sun go down.

Bird watching on the Otter Estuary
The most amazing coastal and river walks with pubs and places of interest on the way
Avoiding any crowds and skimming stones!
The best ice creams in the area (the Creamery)!

Exmouth – 4 miles
A popular sandy beach especially with families with 2 miles of sands and an area of sand dunes.

Recommended for:
Families
Rock pooling
Windsurfing, kite surfing and sailing (certain areas and the exe estuary)
Seaside snack areas and play areas for children

Sidmouth and Jacobs ladder – 4 to 5 miles
Two shingle beaches on the edge and in a very traditional seaside town with many period typically English hotels and beautiful gardens.

Recommended for
Walks through the gardens to the beach.
Good shops and tea houses
Folk festival week – music and entertainment
A very scenic coastal drive (via Otterton and Peak hill - one of the highest points)

Ladram Bay and Sandy Bay
These beaches are both within 3 miles of the cottages and are within holiday parks so there is a charge for parking. Ladram bay is the quieter beach (especially slightly out of season) and is a traditional fishing beach with interesting large red rock formations just off the beach. Sandy bay is a much larger, busier holiday park with sandy beach and many holiday park facilities.

Other beaches
As you work your way along the coast line (Past Sidmouth) there are many smaller beaches and well know villages and beaches such as Beer and Branscombe still within a 30 - 40 minute drive– but we think you will find all the beaches you need within the 4 mile radius giving you sand, shingle and pebble all in that area.

Towns and villages

There are a number of unique villages in the close area.
The traditional Devon Villages of Otterton with its working water mill along the river Otter and East Budleigh – the birth place of Sir Walter Raleigh. Beer and Branscombe with their traditional fishing and pubs. Lympstone and Topsham on the Exe Estuary and many more – in fact in every direction you go you can find interesting towns and villages.

Exeter
The city of Exeter with its Cathedral, ancient city wall and quayside and good shopping facilities.

Other areas of interest

Dartmoor and Exmoor
Visit the amazing wilderness of these areas (to reach Dartmoor – approx 40 minute drive – Exmoor 1 hour) and their wild ponies and wildlife.

National Trust Properties
There are many properties of interest and National Trust properties also in the area (see – attractions page)

The South West coastal path
Just 1.5 miles away with its amazing walks plus round trips along the coast and back along the river in Budleigh Salterton (with a stop at a pub or Ottertons Mill on the way).

Exmouth to Starcross Ferry
Take the ferry from Exmouth to Starcross and walk to the pub – or take a trip up the exe estuary by boat or drive through the riverside villages of Lympstone and Topsham.
